Isla Santa María

Captain Robert FitzRoy discovered that Isla Santa María had been uplifted 8 to 10 feet during the earthquake in 1835. We repeated Fitzroy’s bathymetric survey of the bay off the island in January, 2010. In February, 2010, during another great earthquake the island was uplifted again. Our studies show that between 1835 and 2010, the island sank about 5 feet.
